Upgrading a single-stage adiabatic system to two-stage for even greater performance

Founded in 1989, Pauker Holding Zrt. is one of Hungary's leading sheet-fed offset printing houses. Thanks to continuous development, the company now operates a modern machinery fleet with substantial capacity, its core activity being single-pass 4+4 colour printing.

A single-stage adiabatic cooling system was in operation in the company's printing plant and bindery hall, but the client wished to replace this with an even more advanced solution, further enhancing the cooling capacity of the system as well as the filtration of the white paper dust circulating in the air.

The upgrade was justified by the following key differences between single-stage and two-stage technologies:

- Supply air temperature 5–7 °C lower
- A constant indoor temperature, maintained at low humidity
- Absolute moisture content of the supply air 40–60% lower, and consequently
- Indoor relative humidity peaking at 50–60% RH

Although the single-stage system already represented a significant advance over a conventional air handling unit, two-stage technology clearly offered an even more substantial improvement in terms of performance and energy efficiency.

As part of the modernisation, a total of seven standard IntrCooll coolers were installed in the 450 m² printing plant and the 630 m² bindery hall, in order to take advantage of the more advanced two-stage adiabatic technology, which offers greater energy efficiency and more precise climate control. The result, in line with the differences set out above, was fresher, cooler and cleaner air than before across the entire area of the plant.

At first I was very sceptical about the predicted high energy savings. Once the system was installed, I was able to test the performance and it proved to be above the usual expectations.

"The adiabatic system solved three major issues: first, high energy costs; second, high temperatures; and third, the need for humidity control."
